First Teaching Experience: Reflection 3

My First Teaching Experience

When I went to go teach my first set of Students, It was at F.L Schlagle Library. The setting of the place had several animal figures, live snakes and turtles, books, markers, paint, and inspirational posters to recycle. All of this was meant to be presented in a way where it could fascinate the children. This had a lot to do with The psychological stages that everyone goes through. I noticed that the age group i was working with performed different action patterns and responded differently than how other age groups would. This concluded the stages of Erik Erikson’s Studies; a classic psychologist who studied theories in a human mind.

Since my group of students were aged between 4-5, I already knew they were in the Self actualization stage. This meant they still only thought about themselves, and they thought only what they needed/wanted mattered. This didn’t mean they were selfish or harmful. It just was all they knew. Trust vs mistrust was also involved in this observation. This meant that the children relied on the caregivers (Teachers), to provide care and affection to them. If this happened then they started to develop trust. Eventually they would open up to the caregiver more.
Autonomy vs shame and doubt was also involved. I could see them developing a sense of independence, and personal control. They often performed these characteristics  if the other students were doing it too. They feel like they should be like the other students for shine, meaning to be recognized by caregivers. Doubt or Guilt was very much avoided by the children here.
Things that I observed, and noticed is the young students always need motivation or help. Kids their age know what they’re doing, but they just like to have people watch and tell them that they are doing a good job. At this age level, they like to show off their new life skills or talents that they are discovering. Someone who cheers them on, makes them excited to learn brings confidence to them and trust in you.
As I payed attention to the the teachers regarding their teaching on how they taught, it was very
different from my teachers. I saw that the caregivers were more patient with the young students. The

Ladies didn’t expect that much hard work from them because they were only children. Teachers

know Students learn with the Balance of freedom, but learning with fun too. In High School, students

are expected to work hard 98% of the time. Balance, meaning personal time and school time is only

an option sometimes depending on the teacher and subject.
